HUMAN RESOURCES UNIVERSITY - EMPLOYEE RELATIONS & PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Human Resources University (HRU) was coordinated in response to a need from local businesses on what their main challenges were while running their companies. Anyone having responsibility in assisting with employees in a workplace, including human resources professionals and managers, administrative and operational supervisors and managers, business executives and owners can benefit from this training.

HRU is a series of ten courses developed in collaboration with the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado, the ColoradoSprings Small Business Development Center, Colorado Springs Human Resources Association, Colorado Springs Society for Human Resource Management, Colorado Springs Regional Economic Development Corporation, the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber ofCommerce, and Human Capital Group, LLC, to provide a unique training opportunity for local businesses.

Policy Management
December 10, 2009 – 5:00-7:00 p.m. – $160
Employee handbook or Policies and Procedures Manual (PPM) - does your organization have one? Critical in the communication of organizational information, operational protocol, employee/employer expectations and, if structured correctly, can provide important legal protections. Learn why every organization should have one.

Course Take Aways:

  • Understand the business case for a handbook/PPM.
  • Gain the knowledge of what should/should not be included in these documents and why.
  • Discover the importance of Safe Harbor Statements and how they can protect your company from costly grievances and litigation.
  • Learn strategies to maintain your policies.
Employee Relations & Performance Management
January 14, 2010 – 4:30-7:30 p.m. – $235
Your employees are your greatest resource in achieving your business strategies and goals. However, when employees’ performance is substandard or when there are work behavioral issues, effectively managing these issues becomes critical. This course will cover the basics of performance management looking at planning, coaching, mentoring and evaluating for success.

  • Understand how to effectively tie individual performance to the organizational mission.
  • Learn how important documentation is and how it can effect your operations and bottom line.

Workplace Investigations
January 28, 2010 – 4:30-7:30 p.m. – $235
There are times when the actions of an employee warrant a workplace investigation. We will explore the elements of a sound investigation and fact-finding process to best position your company to make decisions about the employment relationship.

  • Discover advantages of internal vs. external investigations.
  • Learn how to get the information needed to understand what has occurred.
  • Learn how to properly document investigative findings.
  • Understand the importance of post-investigation activities.
Business Continuity Planning
February 11, 2010 – 5:00-7:00 p.m. – $160
What if  ¾  of your workforce suddenly fell ill with swine flu? What if the building in which your business operates ceases to exist tomorrow following a natural disaster or terrorism event? Would your employees know what to do? Is your technology and financial infrastructure safely positioned for such an event? In this post-9/11 world, it is critical to have a Business Continuity Plan in place in advance of operational interruption. Get ready. Be prepared.

  • Learn what should be included in a business continuity plan.
  • Gain awareness of available local, state and national resources.
  • Discover the importance of connecting your plan to your policies.
  • Understand what your local emergency services will/will not provide in an emergency.

          Succession Planning and
          Career Progression

February 25, 2010 – 4:30-7:30 p.m. – $235
Do you have key employees who are getting ready to retire? Turnover robbing your business of institutional memory that you cannot buy? Gain an understanding of the concepts of succession planning and career progression programs and considerations in implementation.

  • Understand what succession planning and career pathing are and why an organization should care.
  • Learn different stages of implementing a program.
  • Gain insights regarding what conditions must exist for the program to succeed.
  • Learn ways to measure program effectiveness.
Navigating the End of the Employment Lifecycle
March 11, 2010 – 4:30-7:30 p.m. – $235
This course will assist with identifying and implementing best practices to legally and effectively navigate the end of the lifecycle, whether the employee is resigning, terminating, retiring, being downsized through layoff or reduction in force or through death.

Course Take Aways:
  • Learn how to plan and execute a fair, legal reduction in force.
  • Gain awareness of statutory requirements.
  • Discover the importance of effective communication during a reduction in force.
  • Understand the myriad of issues around unemployment claims and how to best prepare if your company is faced with the need to appeal a decision.
